Please describe your company and team briefly.

Mantra is a startup that “delivers manga in the world’s languages.”

For Japanese manga, there are many problems with expanding to international markets: Translation costs are too high. Going from translation to actual publication is too slow. And, there are only a few channels for purchasing translated manga. With these complicated issues, many mangas are unofficially translated by fans and read on sites that are not authorized by the original publishers.

Mantra provides automatic translation of manga and a multilingual distribution service that solves these issues with translation cost, distribution speed, and shortage of sales channels. We want to create an environment where manga fans from all over the world can enjoy the official release of the manga they like in a language they understand.

Our core team has two engineers and one editor. The founders, Ishiwatari and Hinami, were researchers in natural language processing and image recognition before founding Mantra. Yamanaka is our editor and has experience in manga editing and video game advertising.

What was the best decision that you ever made?

Founding Mantra as a team, and not alone. We are trying to tackle a problem for which “no one knows the best way.” Startups like us have to face a lot of difficulties and pushback. By working as a team of even just two members, we can find a better solution than what we could come up with individually, and also the mental load is divided between us. We found that we can prevent unknowingly going in the wrong direction by talking with each other, and easily notice if we have some unknown bias in our ideas.

What was your greatest mistake?

We spent too much time and money developing prototypes. If we could know what users thought while developing the prototype, we could have used our time to gather materials and make business decisions faster and cheaper. It’s much cheaper to make something that is just enough to show people offline than to make something that needs to be complete enough to be published online. If we had had the mindset that “Version 2 and 3 can be improved over time with a flexible budget,” I think it would have been better to spend less time working on Version 1.

As founder and CEO, what aspects of the company are you particularly proud of?

We are proud of ourselves. Mantra is trying to solve a tough and difficult problem that can have a large social impact.

It is not easy to become something that “delivers manga in the world’s languages” and to get users who are used to piracy to read official versions. But when we look back at the history of Netflix and pirated movies and of Spotify and pirated music, we think that it can be the same for pirated manga. If we can succeed, not only can we deliver manga quickly to readers all over the world, but we can also deliver the profits to the manga creators who deserve it.

Fully automated translation of manga is not an easy goal. Manga is special in that it is hard to translate. There are many hand-drawn fonts. Manga also has its own language, a kind of “manga dialect.” Even the stories themselves are complex and difficult to convey. This kind of difficult technical task is just too exciting for us to pass up. We are a small team, but I am proud that we are steadily researching and developing to attain a seemingly unattainable goal.

What do you love about working in FoundX facilities?

There are way too many good points to count, but first, it is nice to consult with mentors who have no direct interest in our business through financing, because FoundX is a non-equity and university-initiated program. With the Founders Program, we got a private room and back office support, so it is easier to focus on our business even without monetization. I also enjoyed sharing my progress and discussing issues over coffee with other FoundX founders.

Job security seems to be quite highly valued in Japan. Was it seen as a big risk to become an entrepreneur?

We joined FoundX right after finishing our Ph.Ds, so we jumped into the startup world without the benefits of the “new grad advantage.” We were a little scared, but we felt it was a much greater risk if we didn’t try to work on the business now to get ahead of a sea of possible rivals from all over the world. Until now, we had long academic careers and haven’t actually tasted a higher standard of living yet, so we thought, “Even if we fail now, we can just try really hard to get a job later,” because we are IT engineers after all. That really pushed us forward.

Final remark about FoundX

FoundX will support you so that you can focus on your business. If you have found a worthwhile challenge that can become a startup, all you have to do is apply to FoundX and give it an honest try. For us as well, our challenge has just begun. Let’s all work hard together!
